Roads were turned into flowerbeds on Thursday in Thane's Mira Road area as locals paid their last respects to Major Kaustubh Rane, who was martyred in Jammu and Kashmir during an operation to foil an infiltration bid earlier this week.
Locals sprinkled flowers as mortals remains of Major Rane passed through Mira Road locality.
Hundreds of people accompanied the Army vehicle, which was decked up with flowers and a poster of the martyred Army officer, as it carried the mortal remains to Bhayander in neighbouring Thane district. Major Rane will be cremated with full military honours at his hometown later today.
Earlier, Major Rane's body was received by Maharashtra education minister Vinod Tawde at the Mumbai airport.
Major Rane, who is survived by parents, wife and a two-and-a-half-year old child, and three soldiers were killed while foiling an infiltration bid in north Kashmir's Gurez sector on August 7.
At least two militants were gunned down in the military operation.
