Social security cover extended to 50 crore people, up from about 5 crore in 2014: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi  interacted with beneficiaries of various social security schemes through video conferencing on Narendra Modi (NaMo) app on Wednesday. Social security cover extended to 50 crore people, up from about 5 crore in 2014, PM Modi said while interacting with lakhs of people across the country. "The social security schemes of the Government of India help cope with the uncertainties of life," the PM said. 

Referring to the financial inclusion programme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, he said the emphasis was on three aspects -- opening the doors of the banks for the poor, or banking the unbanked; access to capital for small business and budding entrepreneurs, or funding the unfunded; and a social security cover for the poor and vulnerable, thus financially securing the unsecured. 

About 28 crore new bank accounts have been opened under the Jan Dhan scheme. "I am particularly happy that more women have bank accounts. It is important for women to be in the financial mainstream," he said. 

With an eye on the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is planning to extend its social security coverage to more underprivileged people in the coming months.

The government will add more features to its insurance scheme, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and others in order to cover more people.

In the last three years, reportedly, only around 5.5 crore people have been covered and the government’s new target is to cover all people with Jan Dhan accounts. 

With more than 31.67 crore Jan Dhan account holders in the country, ‘Jan Dhan Yojana’ has turned out to be one of the most successful schemes of the Narendra Modi government.
