Cabinet approves pay hike for Lieutenant Governors, to be applicable from January 2016

According to reports, the new salary of LGs will be three times of what they used to get earlier. The new salary package of LGs will be at par with that of a Secretary to the Union Government.

Salary package of LGs has been hiked three times of what they used to get earlier.

Lieutenant Governors of Union Territories would now receive a hefty pay package as the Cabinet has approved a revision of their salary and allowances. According to reports, the new salary of LGs will be three times of what they used to get earlier. The new salary package of LGs will be at par with that of a Secretary to the Union Government.

"The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal for increasing the pay and allowances of LGs with effect from January 1, 2016 from Rs 80,000 per month plus dearness allowance, sumptuary allowance at the rate of Rs 4,000 per month and local allowances to Rs 2,25,000 plus dearness allowance, sumptuary allowance at the rate of Rs 4,000 per month and local allowances at the same rate as applicable to the officers of the rank of Secretary to the government," an official statement said.  

The pay and allowances of LGs were last revised with effect from January 1, 2006 from Rs 26,000 (fixed) per month to Rs 80,000 (fixed) per month plus dearness allowance, sumptuary allowance at the rate of Rs 4,000 per month and local allowances.

The pay of officers of the rank of Secretary to the Government of India has been revised from Rs 80,000 to Rs 2,25,000 per month with effect from January 1, 2016, as per the Central Civil Services (Revised) Pay Rules, 2016.
