JNU Vice Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar appointed UGC member

The Ministry of Human Resource Development has appointed Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar as a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

New Delhi: The Ministry of Human Resource Development has appointed Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar as a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

IIT Delhi professor M Jagdeesh Kumar was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the JNU earlier in January. His name was cleared by President Pranab Mukherjee from a panel of four names that were forwarded to him by the HRD ministry.

A professor of electrical engineering at IIT Delhi, Kumar worked for strengthening collaboration between institutions, streamline recruitment process and interaction with students.

Kumar, a karate expert, was born in Mamidala, Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh.

He was also the organising chairman of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering GATE, 2012, with the overall responsibility of organising the test across India in 860 centers spread over 170 cities and towns.

Kumar had recently faced criticism after he reportedly attended an RSS linked event. He had, however, denied having any formal association with any organisation include the Sangh.
