New Delhi: JNU students Kanhaiya and Anirban who are facing sedition charges in connection with February 9 event are likely to be rusticated from university for 2 semesters, according to sources.

In addition to Kanhaiya and Anirban, two more students who have been found guilty in connection to February 9 event, held to commemorate the death anniversary of Afzal Guru, are also likely to be rusticated.

The sources further say that some more students including former JNUSU President Ashutosh, former Vice president Anant, present general secretary Rama Naga are like to face academic suspension. In case of academic suspension, the students will not even be allowed to stay in university hostel.

Action is also likely to be taken against ABVP leader and JNUSU joint secretary Saurav Sharma, the sources added.

Some of the 21 students who have reportedly been found guilty are likely to be let off with imposition of fine.

The final decision on the quantum of punishment, however,  will be taken by the JNU vice chancellor.

Reacting  to the possibility of impending action against Kanhaiya and others, JNUSU said that it won’t accept the recommendations of the high level inquiry committee. Terming the committee report as bogus, the JNUSU said that it will oppose the rustication of Kanhaiya.

A high-level panel was formed on February 10 to probe the event organised to protest hanging of Afzal Guru, the Parliament attack convict. Kanhaiya, Umar and Anirban were arrested on charges of sedition in connection with the programme.

Kanhaiya was released on bail from Tihar on March 3.
