The arterial Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed for vehicular traffic this evening as a precautionary measure due to continuous snowfall and rains, a spokesman of the traffic department said.
The nearly 300-km highway, the only all weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the country, was closed for vehicular traffic from 5 pm in view of continuous heavy rainfall at Banihal, Ramban and Patnitop and snowing at both sides of Jawahar Tunnel for the safety of passengers, the spokesman said.
He asked the passengers planning to travel on the highway to contact traffic control room before leaving for their destinations.
The authorities have also suspended traffic on Mughal road, connecting the twin Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu region with south Kashmir's Shopian district, last evening as a precautionary measure in view of the weather forecast predicting moderate to heavy snowfall in the high altitude areas under the influence of western disturbance from December 11 to 14.
