The municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled in October to January 2019, is likely to be deferred by the state government, sources said. The development follows the announcement of poll boycott by two major political parties – the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The State Administrative Council (SAC) meet chaired by Governor Satya Pal Malik on Wednesday is likely to witness a decision announcing deferment of the municipal polls.
"The schedule already announced for the panchayat polls will remain unchanged," an official in the know of things said.
The panchayat polls were scheduled for November-December.
The PDP had announced the boycott of polls on Monday. This came after the municipal and panchayat polls were boycotted by the National Conference.
The participation of Congress in these elections is yet to be ascertained.
The party is expected to make an announcement on its decision at a press conference in Srinagar.
