J&K Police files FIR against army's Garhwal unit for death of two Shopian residents

Two youth were killed and nine others injured allegedly in Army firing at Ganovpora in Shopian yesterday when a stone-pelting mob targeted a convoy.

An FIR lodged by Jammu and Kashmir Police for the killing of two civilians in Shopian district mentions soldiers from a Garhwal unit as the accused.

Police sources said the FIR lodged under Sections 302 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code in Ganowpora village mentions a Major and others as those who opened fire on the civilians leaving two persons dead.

A Magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident by the state government.

The Mehbooba Mufti led state government has also ordered a magisterial probe into the incident even as a defence spokesman maintained that the soldiers opened firing in self defence.

Life across the Kashmir Valley was adversely affected on Sunday by a protest shutdown called by separatists against the killings.

Authorities imposed restrictions in Srinagar to prevent separatist-called protests. 

Separatist conglomerate, Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) headed by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, had called for a Kashmir Valley-wide protest. 

District Magistrate Srinagar imposed restrictions in areas under Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta and M.R. Gunj police stations of old city Srinagar. Police said partial restrictions have also been imposed in some areas in Srinagar.

Rail services between Baramulla and Bannihal towns were suspended as a precautionary measure.
