India on Monday joined the United States of America, China and Russia to become a nation that has anti-satellite missile technology. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced the successful completion of Mission Shakti that took just three minutes to complete.
A pre-set target satellite some 300 km away in the sky was destroyed using a complicated space maneuver, Modi said in a nationally televised speech.
India declared that it did not violate any international law. "This is a proud moment for the country and our scientists," PM Modi said.
Anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) are space weapons designed to incapacitate or destroy satellites for strategic military purposes.
