New Delhi: In an unprecedented development, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Friday briefed CJI TS Thakur and all 25 Supreme Court judges on the internal and external security situation of the country.
At the first day of 3-day retreat at the National Judicial Academy (NJA) near Bhopal, according to a report in Indian Express, Doval sought more cooperation in speeding up the judicial system and underlined that national security should be a non-partisan issue.
After the retreat ends on April 17, the judges will interact with experts from various fields, such as economy and education. Also President Pranab Mukherjee will today be addressing the judges after formally inaugurating the fourth retreat of Supreme Court Judges here.
The report mentioned that Doval shared information on an ‘Indian master plan’ to strengthen national security and listed threats to the country. He also highlighted the importance of technology and how it can be used as a tool to fight terrorism.
During an hour long closed door meeting, Doval said that national security should be a non-partisan issue and not viewed from a political prism. He said all pillars of democracy need to work in tandem to improve internal and external security.
Elaborating on threats to external and internal security, he linked administration of justice to national security saying ‘delayed justice in terror-related and espionage cases affects the system’.
The judges were also told about research and development of capabilities to counter different forms of terror, the report said.
The session by Doval comes against the backdrop of several human rights activists including a group of lawyers led by Prashant Bhushan objecting NSA’s briefing by requesting CJI to allow them to present their case on the situation of human rights in the country.
NJA is an independent society, established in 1993 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Chief Justice of India is the Chairman of the General Body of NJA as well as the Chairman of the Governing Council. The NJA campus is widely acknowledged to be the best judicial education campus in the world.
