New Delhi: In a finding that blows holes in the government’s ranking of educational institutions when compared to how much they are sought after by students, more than 60 per cent of the top 1,000 rankers of JEE Advanced 2016 have chosen IIT Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur and Kanpur over IIT Madras, which was ranked at the top by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
In April this year, the MHRD under its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released the rankings in four categories – engineering, management, pharmacy and university which ranked IIT Madras as the number one institute for engineering.
According to a report in the Economic Times, IIT Madras is the fifth choice among the JEE Advanced top rankers. Last year too, just 103 out of the top 1,000 rankers opted for the institution.
The process had started in December 2015 with more than 3,500 institutions taking part in the edition. The objective of the ranking was to help the aspirants make the appropriate choice of the institution and enable higher education stakeholders to make informed decisions.
However, the MHRD rankings have apparently failed to make an impact on the choice of institute among the top 1,000 JEE Advanced qualifiers. Around 262 of these opted for IIT Bombay, 196 chose IIT Delhi, 167 chose IIT Kanpur and 106 chose IIT Kharagpur.
“IIT B has been the number one choice for top rankers and this has been the trend since last eight years,” Ashok Misra, former director of IIT Bombay and current Chairman of India Intellectual Ventures told The Economic Times.
A few students among the top 1,000 have also opted for IITs including Gandhinagar, Ropar, Indore and Jodhpur.
