New Delhi: Delhi Police unearthed the inter-state racket involving illegal removal of kidneys in south-east Delhi’s high profile Apollo Hospital in a very unusual way.
Monday evening, the Police Control Room (PCR) received a call about a wife fighting with her husband outside the Apollo Hospital in Sarita Vihar. The police personnel who reached the site initially could not understand what they were saying as the couple spoke in Bangla.
Policemen, however, later discovered that the wife, identified as Maumita was fighting with her husband, identified as Devashish Mauli, over the issue of non-payment of money.
When taken to Sarita Vihar police station, Maumita revealed a shocking reason why she was fighting with her husband.
According to a report by Indian Express, Maumita told cops that her 30-year-old husband had sold her kidney to a middleman. She was supposed to get Rs 3 lakh for the ‘illegal’ organ donation but received only Rs 1.5 lakh from her husband.
When interrogated, Devashish initially told the station house officer (SHO) that his wife was mentally sick. He, however, revealed that he had sold his wife’s kidney to a middleman.
The report further stated that Mauli had told police that he had met Aseem Sikdar a few months ago who had offered him Rs 3 lakh for a kidney.
When Mauli came to Delhi, he somehow managed to convince his wife to sell her kidney.
Acting on a tip given by the middleman Sikdar, police raided the hospital at around 9 pm on Thursday and arrested six members of the gang.
The arrested six persons include three middlemen and other three are potential donors, including two women, who were picked up from a village in north India.
Police said that they had some specific inputs about the gang's presence in the hospital yesterday night following which they acted.
