Where and how to check your PNR status online: PNR status or passenger name record is a 10 digit unique code generated by Indian Railways. The code includes information such as the booking status - apart from giving basic information on arrival and departure time of trains. Final Reservation Charts
Final reservation chart is generally prepared before two or three hours of train departure time. This chart is pasted on notice board of railway station platforms.
Types of waitlist tickets and their confirmation priority
When you search for PNR status, the result either shows you a confirmed status (CONF), in this case if the chart has been prepared then you will get a coach and birth number, but if your seat is not confirmed then chances are you will get one of these abbreviation in your status: RAC; GNWL; CKWL or others.
Based on some predefined rules, railway allots different types of waitlist quota on tickets when ticket is not confirmed.
GNWL stands for General Waiting List. The likelihood of confirmation for GNWL ticket is on highest priority. You may get a GNWL quota, if you are starting your journey from a station close to train source station and ending your journey at a station close to train destination station.
CKWL is Tatkal Waiting List. If you are booking your ticket under tatkal quota, you get CKWL status when tickets are unreserved. It is important to note that GNWL tickets will confirm first and then CKWL. Hence there is a very less chance that a CKWL ticket will be confirmed.
Apart from these two popular waiting list quotas, Indian Railways has defined some other waitlisting quotas in long journey trains like RLWL (Remote Location Waiting List), RQWL (Request Waiting List), PQWL (Pooled Quota Waiting List), RLGN (Remote Location General Waiting List) and RSWL (Roadside Station Waiting List). Confirmation chances for these types of waitlist tickets are very less.
What is RAC and can we travel with a RAC ticket?
RAC status stands for Reservation Against Cancellation. The RAC ticket ensures certainty of travel, but it does not guarantee a berth. A berth will be allocated to the person who reserves an RAC ticket. If passengers who already have a confirmed ticket do not turn up before the train departure or get their confirmed ticket cancelled.
Can we travel with a waiting list ticket?
Please do not board the train under any circumstances if you have a fully waitlisted e-ticket. It gets automatically cancelled on chart preparation and passenger is treated as traveling without ticket in such cases.
