In an appalling incident that sheds light on the superstitions prevalent in a wide strata of Indian society, a couple, wanting to end its financial woes, allowed an exorcist to sacrifice their 15-year-old daughter and rape her body in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj on a promise that they would get five kilos of gold.
They never got the gold though.
Mahaweer Prasad, a 55-year-old jeweller, and his wife Pushpa (50), were advised by one Krishna Sharma that their financial crisis will end if they do what he says, according to a Hindustan Times report.
Sharma, who occasionally worked as a driver for Mahaweer, told the couple that they would have to sacrifice their daughter Kavita to appease the deity. If they do so they will get 5 kg gold buried soon after they perform the ‘ritual’.
Shockingly, the couple agreed to the advice of Sharma to kill their 15-year-old daughter.
On Tuesday night, they all went to Annapurna temple where they performed prayers before heading for a peepul tree between Piparia and Badhosa villages.
During the interrogation, Sharma said that the girl, who was semi-conscious after being drugged by her parents, was stripped for the ritual in front of them. He then strangulated her as a part of the ritual and then dumped the body in a nearby field.
Before burying the body, Sharma raped it in front of her parents. He then slightly cut open the neck to collect blood to be offered to the deity.
When the couple didn’t get any gold, Mahaweer complained to the police against Sharma for kidnapping his daughter. The police found the body on Thursday.
The report cited Additional Superintendent of Police, Kannauj, Keshav Goswami saying that the police had recovered the body from the field and sent it for post mortem.
The girl’s parents have been taken into custody for questioning.
