New Delhi: In a shocking incident, hundreds of passengers aboard the Madgaon-Nizamuddin Rajdhani on Monday went through a rare yet scary experience when the train started to move on its own and ran for about 15 kilometres.
As per a report in a leading daily, the train had come to halt when inside a tunnel around 5:50 pm near the Ratnagiri station due to a technical glitch. As the technicians went down to fix the problem, the train which was standing on a downward slope, started to move.
At that moment, the driver was in the Guard's cabin and couldn't return to his seat until the train slowed down after running for 15 kilometres.
The report suggests that vacuum brake of the engine broke down, resulting in moving of the train on a downward slope.
Later, when the train slowed down near an upward incline, the driver went back into the engine and finally stopped the train. Soon, the engine was replaced and the train was taken to Chiplun, the next station.
While some senior officials confirmed the driver-less movement of the train, the Konkan Railway Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Gupta denied any such incident.
However, he admitted to a technical failure in the engine and said, "The train did roll for some time. A high level inquiry has been ordered.”
