Two militants belonging to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and a civilian were killed in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Padgampora area of Pulwama district today.
The killed LeT operatives were identified as Jahangir Gaine of Koli Pulwama and Mohammad Shafi Shergujari of Wagay Mohalla, Banderpora.
Police said that as soon as the security forces cordoned off Padgampora village following information about the presence of the militants, they were fired at, triggering the fighting. Troops of 130 battalion CRPF, 55 Rashtirya Rifles and SOG Pulwama were involved in the operation.
Jahangir (23), son of Abdul Rehman Ganie, was an active member of the LeT since 2015. The ‘A’ category militant was placed in the south Kashmir. He was carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head. As per local sources, he was last spotted with other militants in Koil, Ratnipora and adjoining villages.
Shergujari (25), son of Mohammad Ashraf, was active since 2014 in the south Kashmir. He was also designated ‘A’ category militant by the group. His last local and activities were reported in Pulwana and adjoining area.
Following the gunfight, the Bannihal-Baramulla train service was stopped as the railway track moves close to Padgampora village.
Meanwhile, stone pelting is being reported at the site. This is the second encounter in the area in last few days. Last week, top Hizbul Mujahideen militant Aqib Maulvi and JeM militant Osama were killed by security forces.
