An Army jawan and a militant were today killed in an encounter in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir even as security forces were engaged in another counter insurgency operation in Pulwama district. Two separate encounters broke out this morning between security forces and militants.
One soldier was critically injured in the gunbattle with militants at Nowbug Kund in Kulgam district, Army sources said, adding that the injured jawan later succumbed to injuries.
A militant was also killed in the operation, the sources said.
Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Nowbug Kund village in Qazigund area of Kulgam in south Kashmir this morning after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area, a police spokesman said.
As the forces were conducting the searches, the militants fired upon them, triggering an encounter, he said.
He said another encounter broke out in Laam village of Tral in Awantipora area of Pulwama after the militants fired upon a search party of security forces.
The gunfight was triggered after holed-up militants fired at the security forces comprising troops from the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operations Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), in Laam village near Tral town.
