New Delhi: In a blunder committed by a renowned super specialty hospital in New Delhi, doctors operated the wrong leg of a 24-year-old boy who was admitted to the hospital on Sunday evening.
Ravi Rai, a CA student, was rushed to the super specialty hospital in Shalimar Bagh area after he slipped from the stairs at his residence in Ashok Vihar on Sunday evening.
The doctors told his family members that Ravi had a fracture in the ankle of his right leg and might need to undergo a surgery in which four pins will be inserted in his ankle.
Ravi's family, expecting a speedy recovery, was in for a shock when they learnt that the left leg of their son has been operated instead of the right one.
The incident came into light only after Ravi gained consciousness. He kept uncontrollably telling the doctors about their mistake but they didn't listened to him for almost half hour.
"Ravi had slipped and fallen from the stairs on Sunday. At the hospital the doctors had taken his X-ray and CT scan. They explained us the procedure and trusting their expertise we readily agreed for the surgery. We came to know about their grave mistake after Ravi gained consciousness," said Ravi's father Ram Rai.
Fumed over the carelessness by such a prominent hospital, the family filed a police complaint.
"Patients safety is of paramount importance to us. We are deeply concerned and will take the appropriate action," Fortis Hospital said in a statement later, admitting their lapse.
The irked family later took Ravi to another hospital.
