Icy winds gripped Delhi and NCR on Thursday morning with minimum temperature recorded at 3.4 degree Celsius, the lowest on this date in five years.

The minimum temperature was also four notch below the season’s average.

“The temperature was recorded at 8:30 am and it is the coldest January 12th since 2012. If we look at the record season-wise, it’s the second coldest day as January 6 in 2013 it had plummeted to 2 degree Celsius,” an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

"It will be a partly cloudy day with light fog through out," the official added. The maximum temperature of the day was likely to hover around 17 degrees Celsius.

Humidity at 8.30 am was 100 per cent with the visibility recorded upto 800 metres.

The sky is also expected to be clear with shallow to moderate fog in the morning during the next two days, the weather department said.

With a western disturbance expected on January 15th or 16th, temperatures in the city will rise. Minimum temperature will be around 10 degrees, a regional weather forecasting centre (RWFC) official said.

Wednesday's maximum temperature was recorded 17.2 Celsius while the minimum temperature settled at 4 degrees Celsius, both three notches below the season's average.

A total of 26 trains were running late and seven trains were cancelled today due to low visibility in adjoining areas of Delhi and other parts of Northern India. However, no delay or diversions were reported at the Indira Gandhi International Airport this morning.
