New Delhi: In the latest in the killing of Mohammad Akhlaq in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, a forensic report today said that the meat found in his house, which led to the entire incident, was that of a "a cow or its progeny". This is a departure from the police’s earlier version quoting a local lab report that found the meat to be that of a goat or its progeny.

This confirmation by a laboratory in Mathura has marked a new twist to the case as the police had earlier quoted a local lab as saying that the meat was mutton.

"Initially we did say mutton but subsequently we were told by the lab that it was beef," Uttar Pradesh police chief Javed Ahmed told a television channel.

The police chief said that the report will not dismiss the case as a murder is still an offence.

However, Chand Mohammad, Akhlaq's brother has claimed this report to be an act of politics. "Dadri police said mutton, now you are saying it is beef. We reject this report, it is all politics," he said.

On September 28 last year, Mohammad Akhlaq was beaten to death by an angry mob in a Dadri village after an announcement from the village temple alleged that the family had consumed and stored beef in their house. His son Danish was also seriously injured in the attack.

Reports from forensic tests later proved that the meat found in Akhlaq's fridge was mutton and not beef.

The UP police have filed a chargesheet against 15 people in the mob lynching incident including a juvenile.
