Heavily armed terrorists opened fire at senior political Ghulam Nabi Patel killing him on Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama. According to reports, Patel and his two aides were travelling together when terrorists intercepted his SUV near Rajpora Chowk of Pulwama.
The terrorists opened indiscriminate firing at the vehicle. The leader was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The condition of the other two injured is stated to be serious.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti took to Twitter to condole Patel's death while describing the attack as 'cowardly'.
"Heartfelt condolences to the family of senior Congress leader, G. N. Patel who was killed by militants today in Rajpora. Such cowardly acts achieve nothing but leave one more family devastated," Mehbooba Mufti said.
Former J&K CM Omar Abdullah also expressed shock over the incident and took a swipe at both the Congress and ruling PDP for 'disowning' the killed leader.
"How tragic that Patel Sahib, a political worker assassinated by militants in Kashmir is being disowned by both the PDP & Congress. If neither party is willing to own him as one of their own let’s just call him a NC worker so his death is not in vain," Omar Abdullah said.
The terror attack took place just a day after security forces gunned down four Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists. Two security personnel were also martyred in the operation.
