New Delhi: The Border Security Force (BSF) is all set hoist the tallest national flag by January next year at the Attari-Wagah Joint Check Post (the Wagah border).

The national flag at 350-feet will be visible from Pakistan's largest city Lahore as well as Amritsar. "At that height, the flag would have to be proportionately sized, therefore it would also be the largest Tricolour. There is an intense atmosphere of patriotism during the Retreat ceremony, and the crowds are highly charged. The flag will serve as a beacon for them," Ashok Kumar Yadav, the officiating Inspector General of BSF’s Punjab Frontier, told Indian Express.

The project is part of the BSF's expansion plans for the visitor’s gallery. With a capacity of just 7000 seats, the gallery is currently not able to accommodate the massive flow of tourists.

After the expansion, the gallery will be able to accommodate 20,000 people. The BSF is also planning to make seats available online, the report said.

Also, CCTV cameras will be installed around the new flag to ensure it is not damaged by rain and high winds.

Currently, the largest national flag is in Ranchi, Jharkhand. The 293-feet high flag was hoisted by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar in January this year. This flag was brought down for repairs after it got stuck at half-mast.
