"Shaheed Narendra Singh amar rahein (Long live martyred Narendra Singh)," chants reverberated as thousands gathered to pay last respects to the Border Security Force soldier who was killed in unprovoked firing by Pakistan along the international border in Jammu.

The mortal remains of BSF head constable Narendra Singh arrived at his residence in Haryana's Sonipat on Thursday morning. Anguished locals and family members of the killed BSF jawan demanded that the government must give a befitting reply to Pakistan's repeated misadventure at the border.

Politics over jawan's supreme sacrifice

Politicising the BSF jawan's killing, the Congress questioned the Modi government's policies concerning Pakistan.

"Modi ji, Soldiers are India’s soul. India’s soul, Narender Singh, was tortured for 9 hours, eyes gorged out, legs cut, throat slit and shot by Pak. Narender paid his debt to ‘Mother India’. Question is -Instead of sending "cricket bats" to Pak, when will u bat for our soldiers?" senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala tweeted.

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal also questioned PM Modi's silence over the soldier's killing and asked till when such incidents will keep happening.

"Pradhan Mantri jawab dein. Akhir kya majbooriyan hain Pradhan Mantri ji? Kab tak Bharat Pakistan ke agey bebas rahega? (The PM must respond. Until when Indian soldiers will continue to face such fate? What's stopping you (PM) to take action against Pakistan?" Kejriwal said in his tweet.

Meanwhile, India has lodged a protest with Pakistan over the killing of BSF personnel during the Directorate of Military Operations-level talks, Army sources said.

"In the functional-level talks held yesterday, India lodged a protest against a ceasefire violation along the International Border targeting the BSF personnel," the sources said.
