New Delhi: In a major breakthrough in the horrific rape and murder of a 30-year-old Dalit law student in Kerala on April 28, the police in Kerala have reportedly arrested the main suspect in the crime.
According to media reports, the suspect has been nabbed and the police have sent the his blood samples for examination. The accused was arrested two days ago from a village near the Kerala-Tamil Nadu boarder in Palakkad and has purportedly confessed to the crime.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who holds the Home Ministry portfolio, confirmed the custody of the alleged accused, who is a migrant worker from Assam.
“Police have got all details about the accused. More details would be revealed soon. It is a feather in the cap of the state police,’’ The Indian Express quoted Vijayan as saying.
The rape and murder of the law student had sent shockwaves across the state and the nation after her body was found with severe wounds and bite marks, reminiscent of the Nirbhaya rape in the national capital. The victim’s body was found in a pool of blood in her residence by her mother, when the latter returned home from work.
Two sketches which were created based on eyewitness accounts of a key suspect by the police were vastly different.
A post-mortem report revealed that the law student was stabbed 30 times and the culprit had used a sharp weapon to extract her intestines.
The incident, after being reported in the media, invoked exclamation from different sections of the society in Kerala on the general law and also questioned safety of women in the state.
