Guwahati: A week after Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) won the state elections in Assam for the first time, a Muslim boy from a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-backed school, has given the party one more reason to rejoice. In the results declared on Tuesday, Sarfaraz Hussain topped the state board’s class 10 exam securing 590 marks out of 600.
Hussain, son of a waiter, is the first Muslim student to pass from Sankardev Sishu Niketan, one of the many run under the RSS- affiliated Vidya Bharati.
The 16-year-old Sarfaraz has also won several awards in debate competitions and Sanskrit essay-writing.
Expressing his joy after topping the state board exams, Sarfaraz said, "I am so happy today that I do not have words to express it. I would like thank my parents and school teachers for this. I have worked very hard for this, I used to study whenever I found time."
Sarfaraz’s father Azmal Hussain works as a waiter in a restaurant. He told that he sent his son to RSS-run Sankardev Sishu Niketan because it provided free education.
Meanwhile, State Education Minister Biswa Sarma announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh to Sarfaraz and a grant of Rs 10 lakh for the upgradation of the school.
