Banaras Hindu University (BHU), which is yet to recover from the turbulence following the alleged molestation of a varsity student that led to large-scale protest and a confrontation between students, varsity administration and the police, is grabbing the headlines once again, and for all the wrong reasons.
An M.A. student has now alleged that she was molested and thrashed by another student inside the premises of the university on Thursday.
Acting promptly on the girl’s complaint, the security guards of the varsity nabbed the accused and handed him over to the police. A case has been registered against him in Varanasi’s Lanka police station under IPC Sections 354 B, 504, 506 and 323.
The victim, who is pursuing M.A. in social work, first took up the matter with the varsity proctor, following which the complaint was lodged with the Lanka police station.
In her complaint, the girl told the police that the accused first snatched her phone and then puller her hair. When she went inside the class, the accused followed her inside, slapped her and molested her.
The BHU has been on tenterhooks since September 21 over an incident of alleged sexual harassment of a female student on campus by two bike-borne miscreants. They managed to flee away from the spot despite the presence of security guards deployed at the campus.
A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in a baton-charge by the police after a protest against the alleged eve-teasing incident turned violent.
The students accused the police of abruptly indulging in baton charge without making any announcements.
Following the furore, Chief Proctor Dr O N Singh submitted his resignation on ‘moral grounds’, while Vice-Chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi went on leave citing ‘personal reasons’.
