PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched the commencement of work of an oil refinery in Rajasthan's Barmer district.

Hitting out at the Congress, the prime minister said drought and the party travel hand-in-hand in Rajasthan. "Congress aur aakaal (drought) judwa bhai hain, jahan Congress jayegi wahan aakaal jayega", the prime minister said at a public meeting in Barmer.

"Just for a few claps in Parliament, some people made promises they could never keep", said Modi attacking the Congress for its previous 'misleading' rail budgets.

PM MODI ADDRESSED PUBLIC GATHERING AT RAJASTHAN'S BARMER: AS IT HAPPENED

02:30 pm: Remember how much problems one faced to get a gas cylinder? One had to go to MPs for a letter. Many MPs sold coupons in black. It was not acceptable to me that  women of India should suffer due to lack of cooking gas facilities.

02:26 pm: For them, 'Garibi Hatao' was an attractive slogan. They nationalised the banks but the doors of the banks never opened for the poor. Jan Dhan Yojana changed this and the poor got access to banking facilities.

02:25 pm: When we assumed office, one of the first things we did was to see what work has been done on promises in Railway Budget. Just for applause in Parliament, some people made promises they could never keep. We were determined to end that culture of misleading.

02:24 pm: For 40 years nothing was done about OROP. Before 2014 elections a symbolic amount was allocated even when it was known this sum is just too less. It was our commitment to make OROP a reality and we worked towards making that possible.

02:11 pm: The manner in which Vasundhara Raje has managed drought situations during both her terms, and helped people is commendable. It is in contrast to the opposition in the state, whose poor drought management in Rajasthan is widely known.

02:01 pm: Congress aur aakaal(drought) judwa bhai hain, jahan Congress jayegi wahan aakaal jayega.

1.59 pm:  From here in Barmer, I want to remember Bhairon Singh Shekhawat Ji. He was a great man, who worked towards modernising Rajasthan.

1:58 pm: Would like to congratulate Rajasthan CM Vasundhara and Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for organising this programme in Barmer.

01:56 pm: A few days back India marked Makar Sankranti with great fervour. This festive season is the harbinger of prosperity. Immediately after the festivities, I am delighted to be in Rajasthan that too for a project that will bring happiness and prosperity in the lives of many.

01:55 pm: This is a time for 'Sankalp se Siddhi.' We must focus on our aims and work towards achieving them by 2022, when we mark 75 years of freedom

01:48 pm: I am elated to be in Rajasthan that too for a project that will bring happiness and prosperity to the lives of many: PM Modi at inauguration of project commencement of oil refinery in Barmer.

1.30 pm:  PM Narendra Modi inaugurates the commencement of work at the Barmer refinery.

01:30 pm: The 9 MMTPA (million metric tonnes per annum) refinery, a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the Rajasthan government, is the state's first. Its products will conform to BS-VI emission norms.

01:22 pm: "Looking forward to visiting Rajasthan. Will attend a programme to mark the commencement of work for the Rajasthan Refinery at Pachpadra, in Barmer and will also address a public meeting", Modi said in a tweet.

01:15 pm: Assuring that the refinery will benefice Rajasthan, PM Modi added "The Rajasthan refinery will be the first in the state, which is blessed with immense oil and gas reserves. This refinery will benefit Rajasthan, especially the industrious youth of the state"

01:10 pm: Barmer refinery has been the subject of a political slugfest between the Congress and Rajasthan's ruling BJP of late.

12:45 pm: Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot recently wrote to the Prime Minister questioning why the refinery's foundation stone was being laid again when this was done way back by Sonia Gandhi in 2013.

12:33 pm: The Congress leader said he is amused at the "second foundation-laying ceremony" and that BJP is taking people for a ride.

12:12 pm: The estimated cost of the project is over Rs 43,000 crore.
