Kargil (J&K): One soldier has gone missing while another was rescued after an avalanche that followed a mild earthquake hit an Army Post located at an altitude of 17500 feet in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir at about 10.45 pm on March 17, 2016.
The soldiers were on surveillance duty when they were washed away in the avalanche. While one of them was later rescued, another one is still missing.
Immediate rescue operations were launched to locate the missing soldier in spite of the adverse weather conditions.
The rescued soldier is medically stable and under the supervision of doctors, the Army said.

The incident is reminiscent of a similar tragedy that hit the Siachen Glacier, claiming the lives of 10 soldiers in the immediate aftermath. The soldiers were buried under the snow after a major avalanche hit the camps of soldiers in the Siachen glacier.
Lance Naik Hanumanthappa, who was miraculously rescued alive after six days beneath tonnes of snow, unfortunately passed away at a few days later after being rescued and brought to Delhi.
The soldier battled for his life at the Army's Research & Referral hospital in New Delhi.
His condition deteriorated due to multiple organ failure and in such condition it became really challenging to survive.
