Cabinet approved the setting up of an Indian Institute of Management in Jammu.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the setting up of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Jammu as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Rs 80,000 crore development package for the state. The move comes at a time when the Kashmir Valley is engulfed in continuing unrest for 97 days following the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani.

On November 7, 2015, PM Modi promised commitment towards a peaceful solution in the state by ensuring welfare among the people through his Jammu and Kashmir development package.

While announcing the package at the Sher-e-Kashmir cricket stadium in Srinagar, the PM said: “It's my heart-felt desire that this money will be helpful in turning your fate. This money should be used for converting the state into a new Jammu and Kashmir which is modern, prosperous and progressive state.”

Modi also said that the youth of the state needed employment and assured the PDP-BJP government that the Centre was standing rock solid behind it in its endeavour to restore normalcy in the state.

The package of Rs 80,000 crore included money for providing relief and rehabilitation of 2014 flood victims, better facility for education of children, employment to youths, modern facility for treatment, rehabilitation of West Pakistan refugees and Kashmir pandits, roads and highways, and tourism.
