After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to promote cashless transactions in the country, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked all schools affiliated with it to stop accepting student’s fee in cash from January 2017.
According to a report in The Times of India, CBSE Secretary Joseph Emmanuel has written a letter in this regard to all affiliated schools asking them to accept fee either online or through non-cash mode from January 2017.
"With a view to reduce cash transactions at school, all CBSE affiliated schools shall introduce fee collection from students only online or through non-cash mode from the next quarter commencing from January 2017 onwards," Joseph Emmanuel wrote in his letter.
The letter also makes it clear that even the staff’s salaries will not be paid in cash from January 2017.
The board has also asked affiliated schools to interact with parents during the Parents Teachers' Meeting (PTMs) to make them aware about the benefits of cashless transactions.
In addition to that, the CBSE circular has also asked schools to motivate senior students to promote benefits of cashless transactions in their neighbourhood.
The CBSE has also introduced e-payment facilities for exam fee collection, affiliation and various other activities, including making payments to exam invigilators.
The CBSE’s move to go cashless comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked his ministers to start the promotion of cashless economy starting with their own staffs followed by their ministries.
