Mumbai: Women rights activist Trupti Desai entered Mumbai's famous Haji Ali Dargah early on Thursday amid tight security

Desai, known for securing entry of women at worship places, prayed at the dargah and left the place under strong security cover, reports say.

"Today I entered Haji Ali Dargah. I went till the point where women were allowed to go and offered prayers,”she said after coming out of dargah.

“I prayed that women must be allowed to enter inner sanctum like they did before 2011,” she added.

"The police were helpful this time. This is a fight for gender equality. We will try to visit the inner sanctum next time," she said.

But before leaving, Desai asked the shrine authorities to allow women inside the dargah till where even the men have access.

“We saw where we are allowed till and where men go till inside the dargah. In 15 days, trustees should allow women in, else we will protest,” Desai was quoted by ANI in a tweet.

Desai and other women activists were earlier denied entry to the dargah last month.

After leading a successful agitation to secure women's entry into the Shani Shingnapur temple in Ahmednagar district and the Trimbakeshwar Temple in Nashik district, the founder of Bhumata Brigade launched the campaign ‘Haji Ali For All’ to allow women inside the tomb of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari and offer ‘chadar’ there.
