New Delhi: Just one year after the brutal Nirbhaya gang-rape case, the national capital witnessed yet another shameful incident when a 52-year-old Danish woman was repeatedly raped by eight-nine men at knife point in a garden near the bustling Connaught place.
More than two years after the incident, a Delhi court today convicted five men out of the nine accused for gang-raping the Danish woman.
Here are the 10 developments that give an insight into the shocking incident.
- In shock after being raped multiple times by eight-nine men, she refused to undergo a medical test and took a flight back to Copenhagen a day after the incident happened.
- Delhi Police was informed about the incident at 7:30 pm in the evening and within an hour they claimed to have arrested two suspects and identified the rest.
- It was later discovered that three out of the nine suspects were juveniles.
- In July 2015, the rape survivor came back to Delhi to record her statement at a lower court in Delhi.
- During the hearing at the Tis Hazari court on July 1, 2015, she identified 24-year-old Mahendra Ganja, who hails from Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, as the one who had threatened her with a knife when another man was raping her.
- In another hearing on December 11, 2015, the accused claimed their innocence saying the police had falsely implicated them in the case.
- Meanwhile, the six accused Mahendra Ganja (24), Mohd Raja (22), Raju (23), Arjun (21), Raju Chakka (22) and Shyam Lal (55) were in judicial custody and facing trial.
- On June 6, 2016, a Delhi court convicted five persons for the gangrape of the 52-year-old Danish tourist. Shyam Lal died in February in the Tihar Jail here and proceedings against him were quashed.
- After pronouncing the order, Additional Sessions Judge Ramesh Kumar fixed June 9 for hearing arguments on the quantum of sentence in the case.
- Three minors are already facing proceedings before the Juvenile Justice Board in the case.
