In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Mizoram Police apprehended three individuals after methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 2.95 crore were seized in east Mizoram's Champhai district. The police said the operation unfolded at the Khankawn check gate during routine vehicle inspections.
Police mentioned, that during the inspection, they uncovered a cache of approximately 2 lakh methamphetamine tablets, weighing a total of 22.35 kg, concealed within an auto-rickshaw. "The driver of the auto-rickshaw, Bualchhunga (40) who is a resident of Champhai's Dinthar area, was arrested on the spot," they added.
Elaborating more on the modus operandi used by the smugglers, the police said, the contraband was being smuggled in bags from Champhai town to Chhungte village, where it was intended for transfer to a maxicab for further distribution. Further, police added the subsequent interrogation of the apprehended driver led to the identification and arrest of two additional suspects from Champhai's Vengthlang locality, namely Lalrochhara (33) and Vanlalruati (46).
Meanwhile, authorities have initiated legal proceedings under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. Furthermore, this latest operation comes in the wake of a joint effort by Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police, resulting in the seizure of 2.16 kg of methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 6.4 crore in Champhai town earlier. The coordinated effort also led to the apprehension of a suspect and the confiscation of a maxicab utilized in the transportation of the illicit substances.
