The Mizoram government has sought financial assistance of Rs 237.6 crore from the central government for the rehabilitation of affected people and repair of damages caused by landslides and heavy rain in the last week of May due to Cyclone Remal, state Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister K. Sapdanga announced on Sunday.

Sapdanga stated that Chief Minister Lalduhoma, currently in Delhi, submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday. The memorandum detailed the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Remal and requested financial support from the Centre.

The recent landslides, rain, and other calamities triggered by the cyclone resulted in 34 fatalities and extensive damage to both public and private property, Sapdanga reported.

During a Saturday meeting in Aizawl, an inter-ministerial team representing various Union ministries and state departments discussed the damages. Sapdanga emphasized that the destruction was significantly more severe and widespread than initially anticipated.

The minister expressed his gratitude to the inter-ministerial team for visiting Mizoram to conduct on-site verification of the cyclone's damage. He briefed the central team on the cyclone's disastrous impact on the state's roads, water supply, electricity, and other critical infrastructure, as well as damage to ongoing projects. The meeting was chaired by Chief Secretary Renu Sharma.
