In a major crackdown on the illegal drug trade, the Assam Rifles confiscated drugs worth Rs 1.68 crore from the Champhai district in Mizoram, the officials said in a statement.
The official statement issued by Assam Rifles states that they got a tip-off and subsequently initiated the joint operation along with the Mizoram Police. They seized heroin weighing 240 gm in the Jail Veng area of Champhai on Thursday.
Along with the seizure, the forces also arrested two individuals hailing from Aizawl and Siaha, the statement read. After their arrest, they were handed over to the local police. The seized contraband was also handed over to the police for further legal proceedings.
Notably, the fight against the drug menace has intensified in Mizoram in recent months. While the forces are launching crackdowns on illicit trade and consumption, the authorities are also spreading awareness among the people to reduce consumption at the societal level.
Government spreading awareness against drug abuse
Earlier on June 1, the Mizoram police took out a rally for a drug-free Mizoram. The rally was carried out to spread awareness against drug abuse. The rally which saw thousands of participants also saw State Chief Minister Lalduhoma taking part. He started the rally by showing a green flag in the morning at around 7 am.
Apart from CM Lalduhoma, state Home Minister K Sapdanga and DGP IPS Anil Shukla were also present. The rally for a drug-free Mizoram started in Chamari Kawan and ended at AR Ground Lamul.
