In a surprising case of technology-aided fraud, police have arrested a woman from Kashimira in Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly duping her female neighbor of more than Rs 6 lakh by using artificial intelligence (AI) to disguise her voice as a man's. The arrest was made on Thursday, according to an official.
The accused, Rashmi Kar, reportedly deceived her neighbor and coerced her into paying Rs 6.6 lakh in various installments. Posing as a man, Kar used AI technology to alter her voice during phone calls. Despite never meeting the caller in person, the victim was convinced to transfer the money digitally.
During interrogation, Kar admitted to the police that she needed money urgently and resorted to this trick, employing AI to modify her voice.
Moreover, based on the victim's complaint, the police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
