Maharashtras’ Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday made sharp comments over the lenient measures taken by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in the Pune Porsche accident.

During a press conference, the deputy CM said that Pune saw a huge public outrage because when the accused was presented to the JJB, a very lenient view was taken. Despite two people being killed in the accident, the accused minor was asked to do social service.

He said that essentially, the police in its application made it clear that the age of the accused is 17 years 8 months. “This is a heinous crime. After the Nirbhaya case, the changes in the Juvenile Justice case- that if the accused is above 16 years of age and the crime is heinous, the accused can be treated as an adult”, he added.

But the Board passed a surprising order asking the accused to do social work, write essays, among others. Fadnavis said that following this the police went to the higher court which took cognisance of the matter and asked the police to file a revision application. The court also said the police could again come to higher court if justice is not delivered, Fadnavis informed.

Moreover, the police have filed the revision application and the hearing will conclude till tomorrow.  Earlier, he also held a meeting with the Police officials.
