Pune Porsche accident case: Minor accused's grandfather, father sent to 14-day judicial custody

The minor’s father and grandfather have been arrested for allegedly wrongfully confining their family driver, luring him with cash and gifts and later threatening him to take the blame for the crash.

In a latest development in the Pune Porsche accident case, the court on Friday sent the minor accused's grandfather Surendra Agarwal and father Vishal Agarwal to 14-day judicial custody. Earlier on Tuesday, the court extended their detention till May 31. Both the Agarwal's were arrested by Crime Branch of Pune Police for wrongful confinement of their family driver. They allegedly lured him with cash and gifts to take the responsibility of the accident which took the lives of two IT professionals. 

Following the complaint by the driver, Yerawad Police had registered a fresh case against both the father and grandfather of the accused minor under IPC Section 365 (kidnapping with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine a person) and 368 (wrongfully concealing or keeping in confinement). According to the police officials, the driver was wrongfully confined by the family of the accused juvenile in their bunglaw from May 19 to May 20 and his phone was also taken away. He was later freed by his wife. While Vishal Agarwal was arrested on May 21 fro  Aurangabad, the grnadfather was arersted on May 25.

Police seeks permission to probe accused juvenile

Meanwhile, the Police has written on Friday to the Juvenile Justice Board seeking permission to probe the minor in accident case. According to Police, the minor was allegedly driving the luxury car when it rammed a motorbike killing two techies in the city’s Kalyani Nagar area on May 19 (Sunday). The police claimed that the accused was drunk while he was driving. 

“We have written to the JJ Board and sought their permission to allow us to probe the minor,” said Shailesh Balkawade, additional commissioner of police (crime).

The case and development so far

The accident sent shockwaves to the country especially after the Juvenile Justice Board took a very linent view of the case and granted bail to the minor within few hours of accident asking him to write a 300-word essay. After the public outcry and review application filed by the Maharashtra Police, the minor was eventually sent to the observation home till June 5. Meanwhile, the police had also arrested two doctors namely, Dr. Shrihari Harnor and Dr. Ajay Taware, along with Atul Ghatkamble, a staffer of Sassoon Hospital for allegedly swapping the blood sample of the accused with a woman.  

Later, a three-member committee was constituted to probe the sample change in the Sassoon Hospital under Dr Pallavi Saple of Mumbai’s JJ Hospital.
