A criminal case has been registered against Dr Shayam Wakode - Deen of Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in central Maharashtra's Nanded in connection to the death of a 21-year-old pregnant woman and her newborn baby. A case was lodged under section 304 at Nanded Rural Police Station in connection with the death of a 21-year-old pregnant woman and her newborn baby.
Anjali Waghmare, a 21-year-old pregnant woman from Kandahar taluk of Nanded district, was admitted for delivery on September 30. Although she had a normal delivery doctors said she had some complications. The doctors ordered a blood bag and other medications worth Rs 45,000.
Even after the family brought the medications they were still turned away due to the unavailability of doctors and nurses. When the woman's father complained about this to the Dean, he sent them away. Later, the child died on the same day while the woman passed away on October 4 due to an alleged lack of proper treatment.
What went wrong in Nagpur hospitals?
The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur, where 14 deaths in 24 hours were reported, has a capacity of 1,900 beds and the death of an average 10 to 12 patients is reported there daily.
GMCH Dean Dr. Raj Gajbhiye said the patients who die at the hospital are mostly those who are last-minute referrals and require Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission.
Similarly, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) management said the highlighted similar factors responsible for the deaths. The IGGMCH, which has a capacity of 800 beds, reports the death of an average of six patients daily.
