In tragic news, at least two people lost their lives after a section of an under-construction building collapsed on Sunday (June 9) in Mumbai's Vikhroli West area. Officials said the incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. as heavy rains continued to lash parts of Mumbai and its suburban areas.
The officials informed that the Mumbai Fire Brigade promptly arrived at the scene and initiated rescue operations upon receiving information about the accident from the locals. They reported that a portion of the parapet (iron beam) and a slab of the G+5 under-construction building situated at Kailas Business Park, Near TATA power House, Park Site, Vikhroli West, had fallen, with some parts also hanging precariously, amid the heavy rains. The precarious parts were later removed by fireman using rescue tools, the officials added.
Two casualties reported
Moreover, the officials also informed that the incident led to two casualties. One adult, Nagesh Reddy (38), and his son, Rohit Reddy (10), were taken to Rajawadi Hospital by the locals in the injured conditions, but were declared dead on arrival. Search operations are ongoing.
Mumbai Weather Update: Check IMD Prediction
Meanwhile it is pertinent to note that amid heavy rains in Maharashtra due to the arrival of the southwest monsoon two-days earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday (June 9) issued a nowcast warning for isolated places in the districts of Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, predicting thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate spells of rain.
"Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and heavy spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 62-87 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad during the next 3-4 hours," the IMD stated.
The weather department further also advised people to take precautions while moving outdoors.
