A man accused of smuggling gold took his own life by jumping from the sixth floor of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) office in the CGO Complex in Maharashtra's Nagpur. The tragic incident occurred late Sunday night at the DRI office located in Seminary Hills. The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Deepak Machhindra Desai.

What official said?

According to an official from the Gittikhadan police station, the individual had been under investigation for his alleged involvement in gold smuggling. Meanwhile, authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding his death as part of their ongoing investigation. "Deepak Machhindra Desai was arrested on June 14 from Sangli in a case involving the smuggling of gold from Dubai for sale in Uttar Pradesh. His associate was earlier held after gold worth Rs 2 crore was found in a car going from Varanasi to Lucknow," the official said.

"On Sunday night, when Desai was being questioned by DRI personnel, he jumped off from a window. He was rushed to hospital where he died of severe injuries. An accidental death case has been registered and further probe is underway," the official added.

Rs 78 lakh gold paste found hidden under aircraft seat at Pune airport

Earlier this month, Customs sleuths arrested a passenger after seizing gold paste valued at Rs 78 lakh concealed by him in a pipe under the seat of an aircraft at the Pune International Airport in Maharashtra. Based on profiling, the passenger arriving from Dubai on June 5 was intercepted but nothing objectionable was found in his personal search or baggage examination, officials said. "Since the behaviour of the passenger was very suspicious, he was asked if he had concealed anything in the aircraft. Since his answers raised suspicion further, his seat and a few other spots in the aircraft were searched. During the search, a packet of gold paste was found concealed in a pipe under the seat where he was sitting," a Customs official said.
