The Upper House of the Maharashtra legislature on Tuesday suspended Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve for five days for using unparliamentary language in the House.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Danve was accused of abusing BJP MLC Prasad Lad during a discussion in the council on Monday evening.
During the proceedings of the council, Lad had demanded a resolution condemning Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's remarks in the Lok Sabha.
Rahul Gandhi had pointed towards the treasury bench and said that they are `not Hindus'. Moreover, he had also said that those who call themselves Hindu indulge in violence. Lad’s demand for resolution elicited a sharp reaction from Danve.
Following the heated moment, BJP legislators firmly demanded action against Danve leading to adjournment of the house thrice. On Tuesday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil tabled a motion to suspend the LoP which was passed with a majority.
Deputy chairperson of the house Neelam Gorhe read the suspension order which said, "Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve demonstrated indiscipline and used foul and abusive language towards legislator Prasad Lad.
"His behaviour tarnished the image and insulted the Council. If his misbehaviour is ignored, it could create a new precedence. A serious note is taken of his misbehaviour, and the house proposes his suspension for five days and ban him from entering the Vidhan Bhavan premises," the order added.
After the incident, Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) came for damage control and legislator Anil Parab demanded that Danve be given an opportunity to present his side, but the demand was not accepted. The opposition later staged a walkout to protest the decision and shouted slogans against Deputy Chairperson Gorhe.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism across the country. His remarks delivered during the Motion of Thanks were countered by the ruling BJP and special Prime Minister Modi. When Rahul spoke to Hindus, the PM rose from his seat and called it unacceptable and unfortunate.
