Mumbai: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested four Bangladeshi nationals for allegedly using forged documents to obtain Indian passports, said officials on Tuesday. The accused were living in different parts of Mumbai for a long time illegally with fake documents.
Based on a tip-off, the Juhu unit of the ATS recently arrested them. They had entered the country illegally several years ago. According to the ATS, the arrested Bangladeshi nationals were identified as Riyaz Hussain Shaikh (33), Sultan Siddhiaue Shaikh (54), Ibrahim Shafiulla Shaikh (44) and Faruque Usmangani Shaikh (39).
What ATS probe reveal?
The official said that in the investigations ATS, it came to light that these Bangladeshis used forged documents stating they were residents of Gujarat's Surat to obtain Indian passports. It has also come to light that some Bangladeshi citizens are working abroad by posing as Indian citizens using fake passports
The investigations also revealed that apart from those arrested, it has come to light that five more persons had similarly obtained passports and one of them fled to Saudi Arabia for work with fake Indian documents.
The ATS probe also revealed that some of them voted in the recent Lok Sabha elections with the help of these passports. The official said the arrested accused have been remanded in police custody, and a probe is underway to find out if they were involved in terror-related activities.
Maharashtra ATS is extracting information about the nexus of the arrested Bangladeshis.
All four were presented before Mazgaon Court today. The Court sent three of them to judicial custody while the fourth was sent to ATS custody till June 14.
