Manohar Joshi, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Speaker of the Lok Sabha, passed away early Friday at the age of 86. The news of his demise comes a day after he was hospitalised following a cardiac arrest, according to reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI).

PM Modi mourns the demise of Manohar Joshi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the demise of Manohar Joshi, paying tribute to the veteran leader's extensive contributions to public service across municipal, state, and national levels. In a heartfelt tweet, PM Modi hailed Manohar Joshi as a stalwart who dedicated numerous years to serving the public. Joshi's remarkable journey traversed various responsibilities, showcasing his unwavering commitment to the betterment of society.

"Pained by the passing away of Manohar Joshi. He was a veteran leader who spent years in public service and held various responsibilities at the municipal, state and national level...He will also be remembered for his diligence as a legislator, having had the honour of serving in all four legislatures. Condolences to his family and supporters...," said PM.

Hospital admission

Joshi was admitted to the ICU of P D Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, where he received medical care after being hospitalized on Wednesday. In a statement issued by the hospital, it was confirmed that Joshi was severely ill upon admission. The statement indicated that he suffered a cardiac event and was under close observation by medical professionals.

Health history

This isn't Joshi's first health setback. Last year in May, he was admitted to the same hospital after experiencing a brain haemorrhage, indicating ongoing health challenges.

Political legacy

A stalwart of the Shiv Sena party, Joshi served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999, making history as the first leader from the undivided Shiv Sena to hold the state's top position. Additionally, he represented the people as a Member of Parliament and served as the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004 during the tenure of the Vajpayee government.
