DGCA takes action after two aircraft come alarmingly close at Mumbai airport | WATCH

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has derostered Air Traffic Control (ATC) staff following a near-miss incident at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, where an Indigo flight landed on the same runway as an Air India flight was taking off.

Taking stern action in the aftermath of a near-miss incident at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, where an Indigo flight landed on the same runway as an Air India flight was taking off, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Sunday (June 9) derostered the Air Traffic Control (ATC) staff involved in the incident.

In a statement regarding the nearly catastrophic event, the DGCA said, "DGCA has derostered the ATC staff involved in the incident at Mumbai Airport where an inbound IndiGo flight landed on Runway 27 while an Air India flight was still in the process of taking off."


DGCA initiated inquiry in incident

Moreover, speaking of the incident, a DGCA official has  informed that an inquiry has been set up to determine the root cause of the grievous error and implement measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

About the incident

Meanwhile, the visuals of the jaw-dropping incident have taken the internet by storm, with many users highlighting a severe lapse in coordination. Significantly, the video circulating on social media captured the tense moments of the event, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, involving IndiGo flight 5053, arriving from Indore’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, landing on the same runway as Air India flight 657, departing for Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, was taking off. 

Further, aircraft carrier IndiGo also released a statement over the incident. It stated that the flight from Indore was given landing clearance by ATC at Mumbai Airport. “The Pilot in Command continued the approach and landing and followed ATC instructions. At IndiGo, passenger safety is paramount to us, and we have reported the incident as per procedure,” said an airline spokesperson.
