Pune accident: A 19-year-old youth was killed after a car speeding on the wrong side of a road hit his motorbike in Maharashtra's Pune district, police said on Sunday. The accident took place at around 9.30 pm on Saturday night near Kalamb village in Manchar town on Pune-Nashik highway in Ambegaon taluka.
According to the police, the victim was identified as Om Bhalerao, a resident of Kalamb in the Ambegaon taluka of the Pune district.
Accused is nephew of NCP MLA
The accused, 34-year-old Mayur Sahebrao Mohite, has been arrested by the police and an FIR has been registered against him under section 304 of IPC at Manchar police station, an official said. He is the nephew of the NCP MLA from Khed, Dilip Mohite Patil.
In an attempt to overtake another vehicle, Mohite's car collided with a bike coming from the opposite direction. The impact of the collision led to the tragic death of Om Bhalerao, as he sustained injuries to the pillion rider on the bike.
Probe underway
"The accused was driving a Fortuner car on Pune-Nashik road. He was driving the car on the wrong side of the road while travelling to Manchar village when the vehicle had a head-on collision with the motorbike. The two-wheeler rider was seriously injured in the accident and lost his life," a senior police official said.
"Both the vehicles were badly damaged in the incident. The car driver has been arrested and a case has also been registered against him. We are conducting further probe into the incident," he added.
As per the preliminary investigation, it can be indicated the accused was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, said the police adding that his blood samples have been collected and reports are awaited.
MLA Dilip Mohite Patil reacts
Legislator Dilip Mohite Patil told reporters, "The incident is unfortunate. I will not support any wrongdoing but I want to say that my nephew never consumes alcohol. The police will probe the matter. He is in police custody and his blood samples have been collected."
A case has been registered and an investigation has been initiated to determine the sequence of events that led to the accident.
