Maa Sati or Adishakti incarnated as Goddess Parvati, she was born in the house of sage Katya, hence she was named Katyayani. Maa Katyayani is the warrior form of Goddess Parvati. Being the most violent form of Goddess Parvati, Maa Katyayani is also the warrior Goddess. Maa Katyayani is worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri.
According to Hindu puranas, sage Kaatyaavana ardently worshipped Goddess Durga. Impressed by him and his incessant devotion, sage Kaatyaavan was granted his wish of becoming a father to a goddess, hence Goddess Parvati too birth as Maa Katyayani at his home. She took this birth to destroy demon Mahishasura.
Maa Katyayani is depicted sitting on a ferocious lion, she is represented with 3 eyes, and 4 hands. Two of her left hands are carrying a lotus, and a sword, her other two right hands are seen in Varada, and Abhaya Mudra. Upon worshipping Maa Katyayani, the devotees get rid from their sins. Goddess Katyayani eliminates all the troubles and sufferings from the life of her devotees. The devotee feels a strong sense of enlightenment by worshipping her.
The pooja of Mata Katyayani ,observed with devotion and faith, leads to the attainment of Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. The goddess of Vrindavan, she is depicted as having four arms and three eyes, she is seated on a lion. She is the sixth swarup of Ma Durga and is known as Maa Katyayani. The son of “Kat” was “Katya”. Rishi Katyayan was born in this “Katya” lineage.
Katyayan had observed penance with a desire to get Ma as his daughter. As a result she took birth as a daughter of Katyayan. Therefore her name is “Katyayani” . She killed the demon Mahishasur.
To get Krishna as a husband gopis worship Ma Katryayani in Braj. So she is established as the Queen of Braj.
