Ever since his birth Lord Ganesha was referred as 'Parvati Putra', he was given the name "Ganesha' by father Lord Shiva. Ganesha means 'leader of ganas'. He is also referred to as 'Vignaharta'- the one who removes all barriers.
It is said that one day after her bath Godess Parvati created Lord Ganesha out of the sandalwood paste that she earlier used for bathing. It is believed that Goddess Parvati wanted to have a son who would guard her, obey her and respect her motherly feelings.
The moment Ganesha was beheaded Goddess Parvati went into rage creating mass slaughter until Lord Shiva revived her son blessing him with an elephant head. Since then Lord Ganesha is also fondly called as 'The Elephant-headed God'.
