New Delhi: The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) has roped in some of the country's top designers like Anamika Khanna, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Rohit Bal to give an impetus to Khadi through a mega event in Ahmedabad Saturday.
FDCI, India's apex fashion body, has associated with the Gujarat State Khadi and Village Industries Board (GSKVIB) to organise the fashion show -- 'From Huts to the High-Street' -- where the designers will showcase their high-end twist to the hand-spun fabric, popularised by Mahatma Gandhi.
"We are honoured to associate with the Gujarat State Khadi and Village Industries Board in support of Khadi in India. What makes this association special is that Khadi, which is ideal for Indian weather, will be brought to the forefront," FDCI president Sunil Sethi said in a statement. Sethi, who is thankful to Jai Shroff, CEO, United Phosphorous Limited, for helping them make the event a reality, hopes the efforts will urge people to "have at least one Khadi piece in our wardrobe, which will in turn help weavers".
The show will be held at the Sardar Patel National Memorial in Ahmedabad in the presence of prominent industrialists, textile aficionados, senior level bureaucrats, members of the film industry and students, who will come out in support of the organic wonder.
Not only this, the show will also see a special performance by Samandar Khan, renowned Manganiyar vocalist from Barmer, Rajasthan, who will customise the music to the theme of the show. An official of GSKVIB is appreciative of the efforts being taken to sustain Khadi.
"Gandhiji was a passionate champion of a life pattern based on three cardinal principles -- simplicity, slowness and smallness. Khadi embodies these values and I'm thrilled to be part of this vision of making Khadi a part of every Indian household," said O. Ravi (IAS), member secretary-GSKVIB (Government of Gujarat).
