Cairo: The Egyptian-French archaeological mission working at the Ramesseum temple in Luxor discovered the tomb of Karomama, divine wife of ancient Egyptian god Amun, the Egyptian antiquities ministry said in a statement Thursday.
"The tomb is in the form of a five-metre deep well with a funeral chamber where the teams unearthed some 20 statues belonging to Karomama," Xinhua quoted Youssef Khalifa, head of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector, as saying in the statement.
Khalifa added that the discovery has a great historical importance as it sheds more light on the important ancient figure Karomama due to the rare antiquities carrying her name, noting that tomb was located inside the Ramesseum temple and it dates back to the Ramesside period, over 3,000 years ago.
On the other hand, the joint team working at the nearby Karnak temple discovered Wednesday three small complete statues, including one for ancient god Osiris, in addition to a broken statue base.
Also in Luxor, a Spanish archaeological team restoring the tomb of Amenhotep Huy has recently discovered the sarcophagus god Amun's singer.
Luxor, about 670 km south of the capital Cairo, was the capital city of ancient Egypt under the name of Thebes, and it is believed to be the richest host of antiquities in the world.
